Colonial Pictures is a new commission for the IHOS Music Theatre Laboratory by young Tasmanian composer Simon Reade who has created a contemporary reimagining of the early convict folk songs of Tasmania.
The music consists of a cycle of compositions interspersed with improvisations that explore the themes of exodus, exile and displacement integrated into a series of images by artist Christina Henri, renowned for her emotive installations at the Female Factory in Hobart that interpret the convict experience.
Colonial Pictures will be performed by students of the IHOS Music Theatre Laboratory, a young singers program designed to give young Tasmanians the opportunity to work with professional artists in creating new Australian music theatre.
